Article Abstract:

The California Public Employees Retirement System (Calpers) have formulated guidelines for managing boards of directors and is aggressively pursuing companies in their investment portfolios to sign. Calpers aims to increase the productivity of boards through these guidelines and hopes that the standards would be adopted industry-wide. The guidelines may or may not push through and the may or may not achieve the desired results but getting them to be signed is proving to be easier than expected.

Article Abstract:

Insurance brokers may be hurt by insurance firms that now sell policies direct to customers through mail, telemarketing or the Internet. New regulations allowing commercial banks to sell insurance may also hurt brokers. Many brokers believe that customers will still want the service they can provide.

Article Abstract:

Eli Broad, a founder of Kaufman and Broad, purchased Sun Life Insurance in 1971 and renamed it SunAmerica. The company's stock has performed well as he has been able to successfully sell financial services to the baby boom generation for their retirement, including annuities and insurance.
