Kilimanjaro - Africa's first privatised airport

Article Abstract:

Tanzania's Kilimanjaro International Airport officially became Africa's first privatized airport following the exchange of a concession agreement and the passing of a symbolic key on Sep 26, 1998. The agreement, scheduled to take effect on Nov 1, 1998, calls for the Kilimanjaro Airports Development Co (KADCO) to run the airport over 25 years. KADCO, owned by Mott MacDonald and Inter Consult of Tanzania, is expected to award the operations contract to the UK's Civil Aviation Authority.

Raising safety on the ground

Article Abstract:

Airlines are beginning to consider ways to minimize ramp accidents, which are reckoned to cost the industry between $2 billion and $2.5 billion a year. The increasing incidence of ramp accidents has even prompted insurers to either raise premiums or have the airlines agree to bear the repair cost of as much as $1 million. In the end, airlines should bear final responsibilityy for ramp safety even if ground-handling contractors handle most of ramp operations.
