Kirch, Mediaset and News Corp. discuss alliance

Article Abstract:

News Corp., owned by Rupert Murdoch, is discussing the creation of a European media consortium that could include Mediaset SpA of Italy, Kirch Group of Germany and Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal of Saudi Arabia. The talks, which are not expected to produce anything concrete prior to September 1998, call for News Corp., Mediaset and Prince Al Waleed to invest a total of $1.5 billion to buy a 20%-stake in Kirch. The purchase of a minority shareholding in the German company, which will form the core of the consortium, will give Murdoch his initial entry into Europe after several failed attempts.

Mediaset needs a new script, analysts say

Article Abstract:

Mediaset of Italy has failed in a merger bid for ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG of Germany. Analysts say the television broadcasting giant should look to small and medium broadcasters for acquisitions as the market is mature and very competitive in Italy.
