Singaporeans remember World War II with little celebration as memories fade

Article Abstract:

Singapore recently held a low-key celebration of the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. The event was attended largely by government officials and war veterans, who expressed their disappointment over younger generations' lack of interest in recalling the battles, atrocities and untold suffering brought about by the Japanese invasion. Despite the passage of time, aging veterans' memories of the war remain very vivid.

Singapore loosens its hold on public debate as prosperous citizens voice more opinion

Article Abstract:

The Singaporean government has become more tolerant about criticisms from its citizens. The government has allowed many political debates on sensitive issues to be aired on television and generally been mute in the face of strong criticism. Analysts commended the government's stance on the freedom of expression issue, stressing that such a stance will have a positive influence on the country's future.
