Korean companies suffer

Article Abstract:

Chip makers and electronic companies in South Korea incurred losses in the first half of 1998 because of dropping semiconductor prices and poor local demand for electronic goods. For instance, LG Group's unit, Semicon Co., reported a loss of 249.1 billion won on the first half of the year due to the drop in semiconductor prices, compared to the 16.01 billion won profit it had in 1997. According to analysts, unless a rebound in chip prices will happen because of production stoppages, these companies will continue to experience losses in the next six months of 1998.
