Kurokawa's sunflower opens

Article Abstract:

Kisho Kurokawa was responsible for designing the new wing for the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands, which has now reopened following a 10-month closure for refurbishment and extension. Kurokawa deliberately used a different geometry from that of the original building, designed by Gerrit Rietveld, and chose an ellipse. His building is sunk below grade, giving a curved facade to the park. The renovation has involved other designers and architects.

A modernist heritage: authentic or transient?

Article Abstract:

At the fifth Docomomo International conference there were proposals to add several Modern Movement buildings to the World Heritage List. The List contains 550 examples of building history, recognizing only three modern architectural achievements. The main criteria includes outstanding universal value and authenticity. The Docomomo list is dominated by reinforced- concrete structures and may mean that ICOMOS may have to accept a compromise.
