DHARAMSI MORARJI CHEMICALS: CORE COMPETENCIES?

Article Abstract:

Dharamsi Morarji Chemicals Company (DMCC) has a market share of 41 percent in the Rs5,490 million single super phosphate (SSP) market. Its chemicals business contributes more to sales than SSP. It has recently spun off its technical consultancy and contracts division to its joint venture company Monsanto DMCC Enviro Tech and Engineering. Its capacity utilisation of SSP plant has been 60 percent of its installed capacity of 579,700 tonnes. It has expanded its capacity at Kumhari when the plant is not working to full capacity. It has imported raw material for Rs627 million which is more than 50 percent of the raw material consumed in 1996-97. It has posted a net profit of Rs178 million in 1996-97 and Rs85.2 million in 1997-98. The sale of its stake in Albright Morarji and Pandit Ltd has fetched Rs128 million in 1996-97. Its scrip is trading at Rs25 constantly and the price earnings (P/E) multiple is 4.2 against the industry P/E of 2.9. (rk)

Article Abstract:

Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (Telco) has an overall market share of 66 percent in the commercial vehicles sector. Telco is the flagship company of the Tata group. Commercial vehicles account for 85 percent of its sales. Telco sold 51,030 vehicles in the first eight months of 1998-99 (74,731 in the first eight months of 1997-98). Its sales declined by 29.5 percent in the first half of 1998-99. Domestic sales declined by 33 percent and exports by 39 percent in the first half of 1998-99 due to fall in demand. It has launched a small car, Indica. Telco has spun off its construction equipment division. The proceeds of the sale will help Telco improve its profits. (rk)(vr)
