Labor leaders gear up for key trade meetings

Article Abstract:

The International labor groups plan to capitalize on the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Manila, Philippines, and the upcoming World Trade Organization (WTO) conference in Singapore to raise awareness for the need to institute measures to protect workers in the free trade market. In support of labor, the Clinton administration has proposed the establishment of a working group within the WTO to investigate the relationship between free trade and labor issues. Some observers believe that the WTO might opt to expand the powers of the International Labor Organization to address labor's concerns.

Asian financial crisis sparks blame game: economists are extending finger-pointing to include markets, investors

Article Abstract:

Harvard University economists Jeffrey Sachs and Steven Radelet have proposed a different view on the Asian financial crisis. Sachs and Radelet argue that the inherent volatility of financial markets are to be blamed for the Asian crisis. This view opposes popular and the investment market's belief that the problem was due to weaknesses of the Asian economies. Economists attribute the recession in Thailand, Indonesia and South Korea to the rising current-account deficits, crony capitalism and poor bank supervision.
