Latin lessons for Asian banks

Article Abstract:

There are a number of lessons that Asian banks could learn from Latin America, but these include lessons on how not to proceed. There are similarities between the crisis in Asia and that experienced by Latin America, such as large short-term external debt, and foreign investors that were quick to move out. Argentina restored confidence through quick action, and Mexico has also undergone a recovery. Yet the cost of the Mexican operation was inflated by a number of factors such as giving banks little motivation to ensure that bad debtors paid.

There have been a number of risk-management mishandlings in banks and other financial institutions, costing the institutions billions of dollars. After each mishap, banks take measures to prevent a reoccurrence, but it would appear that too much reliance is being put on risk-measuring technologies.
