Learning Co. to buy Broderbund in stock deal valued at $416 million

Article Abstract:

Learning Co., agreed to purchase rival Broderbund Software Inc. under an estimated $416 million stock deal pending shareholder and regulatory approval. The sale calls for Learning to issue 0.8 shares of its common stock for some 20.9 million fully diluted outstanding Broderbund shares. The purchase will make the software maker the leader in the $500 million educational programs retail market with a nearly 40% share. The deal, Learning's latest in a string of software industry acquisitions, will also cement its productivity software market share that involves encyclopedia programs.

Toy giant Mattel to buy Learning Co

Article Abstract:

Educational software company the Learning Co. will be acquired by El Segundo, Calif.-based Mattel Inc. for $3.8 billion in stock. Industry analysts, noting that Mattel has suffered from problems at its subsidiary Toys "R" Us, have said that the acquisition signals Mattel's intention to present itself as a diversified children's products firm rather than simply a manufacturer of toys.
