Leon Brittan, Europe's trade warrior

Article Abstract:

European Union trade commissioner, Leon Brittan, argues that political issues can hamper the achievement of solutions to trade disputes. He cites the political influence of a US banana company called Chiquita as one factor in exacerbating a dispute about bananas. There are other possible disputes between the US and Europe, such as one relating to genetically modified food. There have been allegations against the European Commission, and an investigation is planned. Brittan is not touched by the accusations against the Commission.

Article Abstract:

University of Chicago professor and bioethicist Leon Kass' appointment as head of a new council on stem-cell research has been welcomed by those on the right. However, his principle of being guided by 'the wisdom of repugnance' may not be the best way of advising President Bush.
