Lessons from Microsoft

Article Abstract:

There is a need for anti-trust rules to regulte companies in a position of dominance in high-tech industries such as Microsoft. There are arguments that the rapidly changing nature of high-tech markets mean that they should have different treatment, but barriers to entry mean that high-tech companies can enjoy dominance, and use their strength to co-opt other companies' technologies. A monopolist may be able to stifle innovation, and this means that there is a strong case for anti-trust intervention.

E-xaggeration

Article Abstract:

High technology companies are often seen as having major economic significance, but their importance is often exaggerated. There are problems in defining what high-tech or knowledge companies are, and some industries, such as the automobile industry, should not be included. Consumer electronics and basic telecoms should also be excluded, since they ar not new, according to some analysts. Prices of IT goods tend to drop, so it is difficult to assess the economic impact of the sector.
