Lessons learned from a tale of two galleries

Article Abstract:

Architect Oscar Niemeyer was not able to make extensive use of hi-tech methods and materials when designing the Museum of Contemporary Art in Niteroi, Brazil. This building is on a rather inaccessible site, and appears almost primitive. However, it can be regarded as a triumph of Modern architecture. In contrast, Frank Gehry's Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, Spain, derives a large part of its impact from its very advanced use of materials. It has attracted so many visitors that it paid off the construction costs in only one year.
