Let's hope that breaking up is hard to do

Article Abstract:

The UK government seems to be adopting a tough stance on mergers and acquisitions between large companies. Trade and Industry Secretary Margaret Beckett has already blocked the merger of Bass and Carlsberg-Tetley, for example, as well as referring the bid by PacifiCorp for Energy Group to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC). She also plans to replace the MMC with a new competition body with more extensive powers. Uncertainty about the government's future stance on mergers and acquisitions is not helping to create a stable climate in which businesses can expand.

Private lives, public thoughts

Article Abstract:

Experts believe that Germany will shortly begin to experience a sharp rise in the number of merger and acquisition deals. However, it remains uncertain whether Germany will see the type of freebooting restructuring currently underway in France, the UK and, to a certain extent, Italy. There has been a flight to value, and this has led to oversupply in the initial public offering market. One of the reasons for Germany's shift to equity has been its relative shortage of public companies.

Olivetti's bid gets real

Article Abstract:

The European mergers and acquisitions scene is dominated by Olivetti's hostile bid by Olivetti for control of Telecom Italia.
