Lithium-ion problems hit Matsushita: cellphone-battery replacement is potentially industry's largest

Article Abstract:

Matsushita Electric Industrial Company Ltd. may face a recall of the lithium-ion batteries supplied to Nokia Corp.'s cellular phones, prompted by reports of an overheating problem. Matsushita has supplied batteries for 46 mil of Nokia's phones; the number of possible replacements would make it the industry's largest battery-replacement program.

SARS outbreak exacerbates a mobile-phone glut in China

China is being hit hard by a glut in mobile telephone supplies, partly the result of the SARS disease outbreak. One executive said that China has approximately 20 million handsets in inventory, which makes up about one-third of total yearly domestic demand.

Mobile-phone unit sales rise

Mobile telephone handset sales increased 12% worldwide for the 2003 second quarter. Total sales reached 114.9 million for the year.
