Long road home: Moluccan exiles trickle back after 40 years

Article Abstract:

Moluccans who retreated to the Netherlands when the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army lost its effort in 1951 to block Indonesian independence again have a chance to go home. Repatriation of the survivors, originally 4000 soldiers and 8500 family members, began in 1976 but progressed haltingly. Most returnees are in their 70s. Only 249 people returned before this year, and some 60 more are expected to by year's end. Many long for a homecoming, but are reluctant for political and family reasons, and 20% who do return die within six months.

Planners in a jam

Article Abstract:

Several proposals offer relief to Jakarta's commuters through alternatives to the crowded roadways, but subways and railways are not guaranteed and will take years to build. Two consortia, led respectively by Germany's Ferrostaal and Japan's Itochu, want to build the subway, though they might work together. Research and Technology Minister BJ Habibie will probably head a steering committee overseeing that and other projects. The daughter of President Suharto has proposed a combined railway/toll road into town.
