Long-span takes the strain

Article Abstract:

The rennovation of East Croydon Station, England has provided an opportunity for an impressive display of design and technical achievement. The new concourse spans six busy tracks and, due to older structures, has to be long-span. Architect Alan Brookes Associates has designed a transparent glazed building supported by a 55m external steel frame. Close attention was paid to technical skill and the properties of materials. Contracts were also closely monitored allowing the budget of 4 million pounds sterling to be met.
