Looking good, working better: Chris Wilkinson Architects' HQ for vacuum cleaner manufacturer Dyson emphasizes practicalities rather than visual effects

Article Abstract:

The new headquarters building for Dyson Appliances at Malmesbury was designed by Chris Wilkinson Architects. The HQ combines manufacturing, distribution, management operations and research and development. The plans included the refurbishment and extension of the existing building. The original block was reclad and an entrance pavilion links old and new, featuring a pond and tensile-fabric canopy with frameless glazing. The offices and R&D laboratories feature displacement ventilation and solar gain is minimized by north-facing glazing.

Architects Proctor Matthews have designed the John Eccles House on the Oxford Science Park, at a cost of 2,232,000 pounds sterling. The Science Park, Oxford, England, is located to the south of the city and comprises of 30 hectares. The Proctor Matthew's building is innovative and more interesting than many others on the site. It could be used by a science company or a technology firm. It has not been prelet. Landscape architects Robert Rummey Associates were in charge of planning the Oxford Science Park.

A description is presented of the Daily Express building in London which was refurbished by Hurley, Robertson and Associates architects. The interior decoration, floor plans and building costs are discussed.
