Looking up: as economy brightens, Japan may escape deflation's shadow

Article Abstract:

Crippled by consistently low prices for consumer goods and real estate, the Japanese economy has struggled with the effects of deflation for the past six years. However, with consumer spending apparently on the rise, the country seems to be seeing deflation stabilize, leading to predictions that economy is headed out of the dark economic days that have plagued it.

Article Abstract:

Toshihiko Fukui, the new governor of the Bank of Japan, is confronted with a situation his predecessors had unsuccessfully tried to resolve deflation. Mr. Fukui views public panic as a significant threat to Japan's financial system, but the only option available to him is to massively pump cash into the economy.
