M dicaments: les carts de prix inqui tent les labos

Article Abstract:

Since the borders were opened in Europe, pharmaceutical wholesalers and retailers have obtained supplies in Spain and Italy where the medications are the least expensive, then sending them to Germany and the Netherlands where the prices are highest. These black market imports represent 15% of the European pharmaceutical trade, and a shortfall of Euros 400mn per year for manufacturers. In order to protect itself, Glaxo-Wellcome, the British group, requires Spanish wholesalers to sell their medications to importers at prices higher than those in Europe. From now on, pharmaceutical companies are negotiating consistent prices in the various countries after their medications are approved. The industry is now worried about the passage of the Euro which will make price differences still more obvious. Experts predict that prices of medications for the general public will drop, but that there will be no noticeable effect for products which are reimbursed.
