Trust and the headhunter

Article Abstract:

Multi-national corporations (MNCs) are increasingly relying on contract consultants for recruiting executives, and a London Times survey of the top 100 UK companies indicates that over 70% use contract recruiters. The growth of the contract recruiting consultancy industry is a development rooted in MNCs' needs to monitor and exert control over the recruiting of executives. MNCs consider outside consultants more efficient than in-house recruiters because personnel departments demand too much discretion over the process while contract recruiters will allow MNCs to closely monitor their operations. MNCs must adopt a strategy to ensure that the proper consultant is hired or must ensure the competence of in-house recruiters if no outside consultants are available. MNCs must build up careful contacts with consultancies in order to ensure efficient service.

Japan's next twelve months: Prospects for MNCs

Article Abstract:

The most pressing economic issues of Japan over the next 12 to 18 months are the strong yen and trade friction. Market openings and reforms may be the response to possible US trade restrictions and the Japanese record trade balances. Some companies have responded to economic pressures by introducing cost-cutting measures, reducing staff, increasing imports, diversifying, and seeking new Asian markets. Restructuring of the Japanese economy and industry would include more liberal monetary and fiscal policies, emphasis on domestic demand instead of exports, and reforms in the land and tax systems. Multinational corporations may experience benefits from restructuring: expanded sales, increased options for entry and expansion, and greater ability to attract Japanese workers.
