Mahathir moves to firm his leadership of UMNO

Article Abstract:

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is moving to solidify his leadership position in the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO). Aware of the growing restiveness in UMNO ranks, Mahathir has taken several steps aimed at giving him the upper hand over his rivals in the party. Political analysts believe that Mahathir's suspicions were aroused when supporters of his protege, Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, successfully ousted several of his loyalists at low-level party elections in Jul. 1995.

Article Abstract:

Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad will leave the reins of government to his deputy Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as he takes a two-month vacation, beginning May 19, 1998. Political analysts believe Dr. Mahathir, whose term as Malaysia's Prime Minister expires in 2000, is showing the public his preference for Ibrahim to become his successor. The 49-year old Ibrahim owes much of his political success to Mahathir.
