Mahathir names confidant to cabinet post

Article Abstract:

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has designated Tun Daim Zainuddin as special economic development minister. Zainuddin, current economic adviser, will be managing the domestic trade, international trade and finance ministries. Zainuddin's appointment is seen by other government officials as a move by Dr Mahathir to gain the upperhand on the economic management of the country. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Seri Anwar Ibrahim has opposed Mahathir's policy of lowering interest rates.

Brokerages consider Malaysia: tough capital controls are expected to be eased

Article Abstract:

Fund managers have become optimistic over investment opportunities in Malaysia. The government has eased restriction on capital movements from the country. Despite the optimism, investors are advised to be cautious because of the effects of the Brazilian crisis on the market. Investors are seen to be holding on to a 'wait-and-see' attitude. Statistics and developments in Malaysia's securities markets are discussed.

Malaysia may soon wrap up investigation of deal maker

Article Abstract:

The Malaysian government's investigation on the stock market's most famous deal maker, Datuk Soh Chee Wen, appears to be successful since Datuk Soh named some Malaysian businessmen involved in the illegal purchase of Omega. The Securities Commission is questioning Datuk Soh for reportedly breaking securities laws when he bought Omega while owning another stockbroking company.
