Making an entrance

Article Abstract:

John Pardey Architects stepped into an education world in taking on the project for the University of Sussex where agendas were changing, whereas the academic leadership was coming to value the campus' built form and see it as an important way of attracting staff and students. The university plans to consolidate from 22 departments into five schools to provide each with a new entrance on the dispersed campus.

Conservation piece

Article Abstract:

The conservative work of the museum housing White and Oates exhibition was taken up by Hampshire County Council, who had to keep a clear vision when painstakingly restoring the local museum. Careful planning of the works by architects Peter Davis and Giles Pitchard paid off, with a project carried out within budget, on programme and with a minimum of disruption to the museum's activities.

Making an entrance

Article Abstract:

The public entrance of Manchester Museum comprises of a few unobtrusive steps up to a small arch in the 1912 building leading to a limited reception area, which symbolizes the new greater openness and provides an orientation point. There is a large archer opening between 1888 and 1912 buildings, which has a broad glazed storey, the floors above faced in lead panels.
