Managers expect a Thai recovery in 1997

Article Abstract:

Foreign investors in Thailand have a reason to rejoice in 1997. Economic analysts say that Thailand is heading for a recovery after a wake of stock price declines. The benchmark SET Index ended 1996 at 831.57%, 35% below the previous year. Bank shares such as those of Bangkok Bank PCL, Thai Farmers Bank PCL and Siam Commercial Bank PCL offer opportunities to buyers because of their low prices. However, analysts cautioned against buying heavily and to buy stocks that have immediate returns to avoid possible losses.

Improvement is seen for stock bourses in Asia this year

Article Abstract:

Securities analysts attending the Asian Wall Street Journal Asset Allocation Panel are optimistic about the growth of the Asian stock market in general, which is being fueled by the growth in the Asia-Pacific region. They are closely monitoring the stock market in Thailand and South Korea, markets that have experienced slow growth and a decrease in its composite index, respectively. Good buys are seen in the Asia-Pacific and Japanese markets, while caution is advised for purchases in the European and US markets.

Money managers put brakes on Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

Financial managers forecast that there is not much to be expected of the Hang Seng Index for 1997. The 1996 rise of 34.5% in the Hang Seng Index made it one of the best performing markets in Asia. However, financial managers predict that the increase for 1997 will just be from 10% to 15%. Other emerging markets in Asia such as Indonesia and the Philippines may offer growth of at least 20% while the Japanese market is not expected to improve.
