Mandarin-speaking sales clerks draw much-needed clients: once shunned, mainlanders now form bright spot in otherwise gloomy tourism, retail sectors

Article Abstract:

Tourists from mainland China are helping to revitalize Hong Kong's sluggish tourism and retail sectors. Often ignored and considered 'country bumpkins' in the past, Chinese consumers are now openly courted by Hong Kong businesses because they pay in cash and are attracted to European brands. To attract these consumers, stores, restaurants, hotels and other business establishments in the former British colony are training their people to speak Mandarin and putting up signs that say 'We accept renminbi.'

Takeover talks hit Hero

Article Abstract:

Investment analysts predict that Multipolar may move to acquire Hero Supermarket as the move is seen to increase Multipolar's share price and make its rights issue more attractive. Hero is one of the less attractive stocks in the Indonesian stock market and analysts see the move as just a speculative buy. Investment advisers recommend selling Hero stocks as the prospects for growth are not quite attractive for investments

Among the major firms which are expected to make the greatest gains once the recovery materializes are Giordano International Ltd, Esprit Holdings Ltd, Dickson Concepts (International) Ltd and Four Seas Mercantile Holdings Ltd. The region's property sector is expected to recover by the year 2000.
