The geographical positioning of France is the primary factor that makes the country an ideal tourist spot in Western Europe. Between the country's vast east-west stretch lie beautiful beaches in Britanny and Aquitaine. During winter, the French Alps offer an irresistible attraction to tourists. The varying climates within the country's north and south regions also contribute to the attractions of the country. While some people prefer the cooler and more industrial northern region, others delight in the warm climate in the south of France.

The days of ferries being the only mode of transport by water to and from France via the Channel-UK route are long over. The advent of the Channel Tunnel has brougt in a major competitor for operators of passenger ferry travel in the cross-Channel market. In fact, 40% of the combined market share of the three main cross-Channel ferry operators has already been lost. To make up for such loss and to provide ample competition to the Eurotunnel, the ferry operators have been forming joint ventures and strategic alliances.

Article Abstract:

A series of onslaughts conducted by Algerian terrorists in France between July 1995 and October 1995 have prevented foreigners from visiting the country. Because of the terrorist attacks, frightened tourists, in particular North Americans, opted to spend vacations elsewhere. Consequently, related industries such as the hotel and the museum industry suffered also. However, since no more untowardly incidents have happened since 1995, foreigners have started to return to France to spend their holidays.
