Market profile 3: music and leisure software in Italy

Article Abstract:

Music sales in Italy grew nearly 6% to $353 million in 1998 from 1997, according to the Federation of the Italian Music Industry. Sales of single format music grew 62% in volume to 3.5 million units in 1998, rising 63% in value to $9.4 million. Sales of CD format music grew over 8% by value to $265 million. Volume music sales grew 4% to 27.3 million units in first-half 1999, rising 2.3% in value to $195 million. CD single sales rose 53% in value to $4.8 million, rising 46% in volume to 2.45 million units. Italy's leisure software music is also expected to continue growing.

Article Abstract:

France ranks fifth worldwide as a market for music, with sales of 123.7 million albums in 1998, but is considered a difficult country for the computer games industry to penetrate, despite a lot of potential. There is concern in both sectors about piracy. Hypermarkets play a major role in both sectors.

Music and leisure software in Belgium

Article Abstract:

Belgium's music industry amounted to 330.9 million euros in 1998, with music unit sales reaching 25.6 million. The relatively stagnant market is attributed to a decline in the number of younger people and a rising population of older people.
