British companies are eagerly expanding in Asia due to huge infrastructure projects there and expectations of skyrocketing personal wealth creating a vast consumer market. Southeast Asia is now the top locale for UK overseas investment. China is hugely popular, and drew 640 British projects with a total investment of $1.4 billion since 1979. Two-way trade with the region is rising quickly, and the UK's trade deficit is narrowing. Britain's 100 largest companies expect to make 20% of their profits in Asia by 2001.

Lands of opportunity: Britain ties its future to Asia's growth
Article Abstract:
Leaders in both Great Britain and Asia remain convinced that Asia's growth, rising imports, and potential to create jobs elsewhere make it a crucial region for companies based in Europe. Direct investments in the UK by Asian multinationals created 22,500 jobs in the past two years, and UK exports to Asia are rising quickly, so Asia may well create more jobs than it destroys. At the same time, European countries should learn from the most successful Asian economies, many of them former UK colonies.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) introduced a home page on the Internet's World Wide Web in May 1995 which has proved to be very successful. Located at http: www.asiandevbank.org, the ADB's home page includes information on the bank and on current projects. The ADB has put its 'ADB Business Opportunities' publication online free of charge. This was previously available only to the public on a subscription basis at an annual cost of $100.
