Martial races

Article Abstract:

Investigations conducted by the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) revealed a large number of former Vietnamese military personnel residing in Cambodia in violation of the Paris agreements. Khmer Rouge guerillas, not to mention various Cambodian political sectors, believe that their presence is part of a Vietnamese tactic to control their nation anew. Both the Vietnamese and Cambodian government are accusing the UNTAC of contributing to this situation which has already led to the massacre of Vietnamese civilians in Cambodia.

Blast from the past

Article Abstract:

Vietnamese groups opposed to the Hanoi government have training bases and arms caches in Cambodia, and many are led by naturalized US citizens. The groups, which together have as many as 2000 members, threaten relations between Hanoi and Phnom Penh, and to a lesser degree between Vietnam and the US. Former members of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam and so-called Kampuchea Kraom comprise the groups, which are funded mostly by Vietnamese in the US via fronts in Phnom Penh. The Kampuchea Kraom have some Cambodian support.

Land reclamation: Phnom Penh government wants lost lands returned

Article Abstract:

The new Cambodian government is calling on Vietnam and Thailand to give back the Cambodian land that they took illegally in the 1980s. King Norodom Sihanouk's government has made regaining the lost border territories a top foreign policy goal. Sihanouk has sent private messages to Vietnam's government, urging a peaceful return to the borders recognized in the early 1960s. To pressure Thailand, Thai business activity in Cambodia may be curbed. The UN largely supports Cambodia's claims.
