Mating season

Article Abstract:

Former Philippine Chief Justice Marcelo Fernan is now the running mate of presidential aspirant Ramon Mitra. This developed from the break up of the political party engineering Fernan's bid for the presidency. Fernan's former supporters have likewise realigned with other parties. Cebu Governor Emilio Osmena is administration candidate Fidel Ramos' vice presidential bet, while his brother, Senator John Osmena has secured the vice presidential slot in Eduardo Cojuangco's slate. This alliance was unexpected in view of Osmena's imprisonment during the Marcos regime which Cojuangco supported.

There are 83 candidates in the Philippines election being held on 11 May 1998. Imelda Marcos is one of them and she says that she will use her late husband's wealth to boost the economy. Vice-President, Joseph Estrada, has six main rivals, including Emilio Osmena and Alfredo Lim, both of whom have improved their ratings in recent opinion polls. Estrada had 28% of the vote in the poll while Osmena had 17% and Lim had 14%. Osmena believes that Imelda Marcos will take some of Estada's support. Osmena has campaigned in support of the lower classes and they are the largest group of voters.
