Maxwell's silver typewriter

Article Abstract:

William Maxwell was an author who initially taught writing, and had to contend with a system that penalized lack of commas. He developed a dual system of marking, for both content and form, and later exhibited a charitable attitude to writers whom he helped, both those whose work he rejected and those whose work he edited. He based much of his work on the small town he grew up in. The great Russian authors such as Tolstoy are the heroes of William Maxwell.
