Megawati rejects charges of ties to neo-Communists

Article Abstract:

Indonesian politician Megawati Sukarnoputri has denied claims by Pres. Suharto's followers that she is being used by the Partai Rakyat Demokrat to promote their pro-Communist ideas. The charge was a result of the violent clash between the government security personnel and her followers resulting in the death of three people, injuries to many others and destruction of several edifices. In her defense, Megawati accused the military of having instigated the clash because of its role in her ouster from the leadership post of her party.

Opposition leader Megawati Sukarnoputri's tough stand against the Indonesian government's move to depose her as Indonesian Democratic Party chief has received widespread support from opposition groups. Observers believe that Megawati must maintain her stature as a rallying cause for anti-government activities. However, excessive use of force in demonstrations should be avoided to maintain the support of the middle class and educated individuals.
