Biju Patnaik

Article Abstract:

Bijoyanananda Patnaik, a colleague of Mahatma Gandhi who served as chief minister of Orissa, died at age 81 on Apr 17, 1997. Patnaik, an aviator who earned praise for his military exploits in the Second World War and the Indonesian independence movement, helped to found India's Janata Party.

The Indian government hopes to develop a more dynamic industrial policy, and it is beginning with its most profitable company, Indian Oil Corp. Eight other companies will also be revamped, but changes may not mean much if the state retains majority ownership.
