Mercury Development Capital

Article Abstract:

Mercury Development Capital (MDC) has had a busy year in 1995 in spite of tough competition in the sector, but has been disappointed by the quality of businesses for sale. MDC is involved in a variety of private equity deals, including buy-ins and buyouts, start-ups and development capital. MDC head Ian Armitage says that MDC's strategy is based on investing in profitable firms with the potential to become 'young, large companies'. For smaller buyouts, MDC insists that the business should be innovative in the way in which it offers a service or product, so that the company has an edge.

NatWest Ventures

Article Abstract:

One of the strengths of UK venture capital firm NatWest Ventures (NWV) is the fact that is backed by a leading banking group and always has funds to invest in a firm at the right time and at the right price, according to NWV managing director David Shaw. Another advantage for NWV is its regional offices in Edinburgh, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol and Manchester, where regional directors have developed close links with their local communities. NWV now aims to boost its continental European presence, via direct investment, investment from the UK, and co-operation with foreign partners.

Candover

Article Abstract:

UK venture capital firm Candover has grown rapidly since its 1980 creation, and now manages one of Europe's biggest sources of equity finance for unquoted firms. Since its 1984 flotation, Candover has seen its net asset value rise by an annual compound rate of 21%, reaching over 84 million pounds sterling. Chief Exec Stephen Curran attributes Candover's success to its stability, focus and independence, which he believes make the firm stand out from its rivals. Candover is committed to a cautious investment policy instead of rushing into investments simply to maintain volume.
