Materials like stone and bricks were traditionally used for homemaking, but the use of other material palettes in buildings for work and leisure, plus the increasing diversity of residential buildings have resulted in loss of tradition. Designers are largely focusing on 'metallic' finish of the Colorcoat HPS200 range, which can sit comfortably in the residential sector, especially in luxury apartments and buildings where a contemporary aesthetic is required.

Experimental new housing stock in Isla Margarita, Almere, Netherlands, is discussed that has taken leave of traditional Dutch residential construction practices. The 18 homes erected for a national Building and Living Expo used steel as a main structural element while the residents of the 18 houses in Isla Margarita could decide the layout of their home.
