Middle East Public Offer: Qatar Telecom

Article Abstract:

The Dec. 1-14 privatisation of telecom company Qatar Public Telecommunications Corp. raised QR2.7bn (US$742m) in a sale with a fixed price offering of QR60 (US$$16.50) per share. About 30-40% of the shares were sold in Qatar and about 5% of the investments came from outside the Middle East. The deal was a landmark in that Qatari citizens were permitted to buy shares and the interest from the Middle East could set precedents in other Qatari company privatisations.

Telecom Italia takeover target

Italy's Treasury faced a dilemma when Olivetti made a hostile takeover bid for Telecom Italia at the end of February. The Ministry still owns 3.4% of the formerly state-controlled fixed and mobile telecoms operator, the residual shares left unallocated from the bonus loyalty scheme that was part of the secondary offering in October 1997 and from a non-finalised strategic arrangement with AT&T.
