Mifid recasts EU's competitive landscape: failure to comply might be a setback for some markets

Article Abstract:

Approximately one third of the European Union's 27 member countries have yet to implement the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MIFID), which is aimed at increasing competition in trade through fostering listed company investments and reducing transaction costs. Noncompliance may hurt some financial institutions, as transaction costs will be less attractive than in MIFID-ready nations.

EU puts Volkswagen Law on trial

The European Union's highest court is to decide the fate of the Volkswagen Law that protects Volkswagen AG of Germany from takeover bids. The case highlights the interests of the European Union in promoting cross border mergers juxtaposed against Germany's economic protectionism.

EU offers limited plan for mortgage market

Article Abstract:

The European Union is encouraging cross border mortgage markets but there are obstacles, particularly language. This economic policy would increase choice for consumers and increase competition amongst mortgage lenders and likely to decrease interest payments.
