Mix and match: Russia and US split order for combat aircraft

Article Abstract:

Malaysian Defense Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced that his country is planning to buy 18 MiG29M fighters from Russia and eight McDonnell Douglas F/A18D strike aircraft from the US. Malaysia will thus become the first Assn of South East Asian Nations (Asean) member to acquire combat airplanes from Russia, which will thereby become a participant in the Southeast Asian arms market. Malaysia will be the only Asean member to possess these potent and technologically sophisticated twin-engine aircraft.

Apples of discord

Article Abstract:

Relations between the US and Malaysia have been strained due in part to Malaysian suspicions on the role the former played in the rejection by Asian countries of a proposed regional economic grouping. The proposed East Asia Economic Caucus, a brainchild of the Malaysian government, was rejected by Asian countries apparently as a result of US pressure. In a retaliatory move, the Malaysian government ordered a review of commercials for imported US grapes and apples.

Monkey wrench

Article Abstract:

Monkeys harassing US embassy workers in Malaysia were shot recently, leading to a confrontation with the press. The embassy claims it complained but did not dictate the resolution; the Wildlife Department says it had to shoot the monkeys when trapping failed. The Royal Selangor Golf Club had treated the 50-odd animals as mascots. Local press complaints about superpower arrogance may have been fueled by anger at the American tabloid, 'Weekly World News.'
