John Winter is a modern architect and demonstrates his confidence in modern design by living in a steel-framed structure which is opposite a cemetery. He feels that many contemporary architects have not had the support they deserve in Britain, and that some top quality building designs are not being given the chance to be implemented. The current trend of protecting older constructions in preference to better, modern designs worries Winter.

The Sir Alexander Fleming Building, Imperial College, London, is designed to meet the needs of teaching and research staff employed by the University. The modern building was designed by architects Foster & Partners' in 1991, in accordance to University requirements, and opened in 1998. The seven-storey structure contains research laboratory facilities and a glass service tower.
