More misery ahead

Article Abstract:

It will take at least three years for Indonesia's economy to return to stability. It will be necessary to revive faith in the rupiah and the government, and this will only happen if the government meets the conditions of the International Monetary Fund's reform package and deals with political and social problems. Once stability of the exchange rate has been achieved, it will then be necessary to revive confidence in the banking system. It is vital to restore the deposit base and to allow normal money-market and letter-of-credit transactions to resume.
