Mountainous Nepal aims to attract a more upscale brand of tourist

Article Abstract:

Nepal has undertaken a massive effort to improve its tourism industry. It has initiated air agreements with neighboring countries, upgraded the lodging facilities in the country's frequented tourism sites, and has initiated village education on tourism to present a better tourism climate to visitors. Nepal's tourism industry, which was formerly dominated by affluent trekkers and adventurers who can pay as much as $65,000 per person when the Everest climbing season peaks in spring. The tourism upgrade is designed to increase tourist stay from 11.3 days to 12 or 13 days and spending to increase from $42/day to $50/day.

Hong Kong seeks more zest in tourism: city injects life into its ad campaign to stem decline in visits

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong tourism authorities have unveiled a HK$100 mil marketing campaign which is hoped to reverse the decline in tourist visits to the island. Hong Kong's tourism industry suffered a decline starting with the handover to China, and aggravated by the Asian currency crisis. The marketing campaign, centered around the slogan 'We are Hong Kong: City of Life' hopes to attract more foreign visitors. Monthly tourist numbers have declined by 25% since the handover and Hong Kong tourism authorities are modest in their expectations, hoping to increase arrivals by 2% for 1998.

Publicity over gunplay in Macau may be damping weekend tourism

Article Abstract:

Macau's tourism industry is suffering losses and decline in the number of visitors due to the increase in crime rate. Tourism authorities are doing their best to erase Macau's reputation of being a haven for robbers and promote it as a wine-and-dine destination by means of fireworks competitions, festivals and the building of a wine museum. Meanwhile, the government is also trying to promote the place by initiatives such as the building of a marine theme park worth $150 million.
