Mounting corporate woes spook investors in Taiwan

Article Abstract:

Investors in Taiwan have expressed extreme apprehension over the worsening condition of the stock market, as government officials struggle to remedy the country's ailing economy. The country endured a massive blow during the first week of Oct 1998, when the main stock index dropped by 4 percentage points. These problems have not only caused serious financial problems to companies such as U-Land Group and Tong Lung Metal Industry, but have also triggered the closure of other businesses, including Ban Yu Paper Mill.

Volatility is curbing foreign interest in Indian stocks

Article Abstract:

The volatile Indian stock exchange has dampened foreign investments into the market. Bombay Stock Exchange shares have dropped 2.1% on June 22, 1998 with the rupee also falling against the dollar, closing at 42.74. The current stock market condition may be attributed to the country's trading status with the US. Japan, the US and other nations have instituted economic embargoes on India due to its involvement with nuclear testing. Moreover, foreign investors are met with bureaucratic economic policies.
