MuchMoreMusic is ready for debut

Article Abstract:

MuchMoreMusic, a music channel, is preparing for a 3.5-million household introduction on Sep. 30, 1998, after carriage deals with cable and satellite operators in early August 1998. MuchMoreMusic is the adult contemporary music channel from CHUM Television in Toronto, Ontario. The channel will be offered by Canada's biggest cable operator, Rogers Cablesystems in Toronto, Ontario, Videotron Communications Ltd. in Edmonton, Alberta, and members of the Canadian Cable Systems Alliance. An official says advertiser interest in the channel is high, especially with the continued increase in households covered which now stands at 3.5 million.

Aboriginal net begins ad sales push

Article Abstract:

The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) expects to earn C$1.2 million a month from eight million basic cable households when it starts operations on Sep 1, 1999. It also expects to earn at least $700,000 from advertising revenues during its first 12 months. APTN plans to offer 120 hours of programminmg, 72 in English, 18 in French, and the rest in Cree, Ojibwa, Inuktitut and other aboriginal languages. Its viewership would be people of aboriginal background plus non-aboriginal Canadians who are interested in their culture, history and the way of life of aborigines.

Cable biz wants CRTC makeover

Article Abstract:

The Canadian cable television industry is calling for radical changes in government regulation of the communications industry. The Canadian Cable Television Assn has drafted a document of proposed changes including one calling for new public policies that would encourage the formation of new companies through a convergence of distribution, programming, new media and electronic commerce. Another proposal calls for cable systems with fewer than 20,000 subscribers to be freed from regulation.
