Article Abstract:

Turkish authorities are concerned that Hadep, the only political party supporting the Kurds, which is legal, could perform well enough in elections to secure a large number of mayors' posts in south eastern Turkey. There have been a number of cases of intimidation of Hadep members. Hadep denies that the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which is banned, influences it, but many Hadep members have expressed support for the PKK. There is a debate as to whether Hadep should be banned from taking part in the elections, and the views of the army could be a deciding factors.
