Near the buffer

Article Abstract:

Amtrak, the US government-owned railway concern, has seen serious financial problems since its creation in 1970, and its future now appears uncertain. It has only survived so long while making a loss because many commuters rely on it and because train travel appeals to many Americans. Some politicians want Amtrak to continue to receive government funding, even though this is hard to justify economically, while others, mainly from states with few links with rail travel, believe that Amtrak should be shut down.
