Bedridden

Article Abstract:

The British National Health Service (NHS) is under pressure due to a flu outbreak and a drop in the number of hospital beds. There are not enough beds at times of peak demand and there are also not enough staff due to a shortage of nurses. NHS Direct is a new service that may have taken some pressure off hospitals, but the government needs to carry out a study of demand for beds, in order to have enough information to tackle the problem of insufficient supply at times of peak demand.

Milburn's balancing act

Article Abstract:

The ruling Labor party is to spend more on the British National Health Service (NHS), and the chief executive of the NHS has resigned. Rationing is still an issue in the NHS despite changes. Physicians have made decisions on allocating resources, but new technologies and increased demand are eroding their control. There are geographical variations in NHS provision of different types of care. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence could standardize health care delivery, but its recommendations could lead to cust elsewhere. There is a need for greater public debate on this issue.
