New Zealand tourism slows; Thai travelers provide glimmer of good news

Article Abstract:

New Zealand's tourism industry is suffering from the effects of the Asian economic crisis. For the past 12 months to Nov 1998, tourist arrivals from Asia except Japan plunged 43% while arrivals from South Korea and Hong Kong fell by 86% and 6%, respectively. However, one bright spot is the arrival of Thai tourists due to the strengthening of the baht against the New Zealand dollar. Arrivals from the US and UK have also increased by 12% and 4%, respectively.
