New techniques in conservation

Article Abstract:

Building conservation specialist, Hutton and Rostron Environmental Investigations is collaborating with Dundee University and the Danish Technological Institute on European Community sponsored research into non-destructive and environmentally sensitive methods of investigating and treating timber decay. These include biological fungus control and heat treatment of rot. Some methods already available include hydraulic lyme, plaster blocks and special acoustic flooring. Full of environmental promise: Energy-saving was only one of several design concerns for Berlin's Reichstag, but its promise appears to be high

Article Abstract:

Berlin's Reichstag is an energy-conserving design, which was a compromise for designers Foster and Partners, Kaiser Bautechnik and Kuhn Bauer und Partner. A major change to the existing structure will be the main debating chamber, with a glass cupola at roof level, providing panoramic views. A central, concave cone-like form penetrates down from the chamber clad in angle mirrors that reflect diffuse skylight, and also houses air-extract and heat-exchange equipment. Ventilation is through a conventional ducted system and a cogeneration plant is to provide heat, electricity and cooling.

Slowing the march of time: preserving decaying buildings as monuments presents particular problems, as an RIBA conservation group visit to Telford showed

Article Abstract:

RIBA West Midlands Conservation Group visited Telford and was introduced to conservation problems particular to the area by John Wheatley of architect Wheatley Taylor Stainburn Lines (WTSL). It was noted that it can be difficult to determine original ground level, as new buildings were often constructed on the ruins of old buildings. Also some sites lay over unstable strata and retaining walls often lack buttressing, returns and drainage. WTSL's work at the Blists Hill, Bedlam and Museum of Iron sites were discussed.
