Nigeria's best chance

Article Abstract:

Nigeria has held local elections with a healthy turnout and counting that has been fairly efficient. Nigeria has one more chance to move toward democracy, which would allow the country to take on a leading role in the region. Another coup could lead to the end of Nigeria as a nation state, due to the persistence of ethnic and regional loyalties. Politics and institutions in Nigeria have to change for democracy to flourish. Aid donors and creditors could make aid conditional on democracy and a government that is competent.
